Today [livejournal.com profile] sovez and I shot our very own bows and arrows. With the rental I would whack my arm with the string every other time, and with my bow not once. I think it likes me. Over two days I went from missing the broad side of the barn to being rather presice if not yet accurate (the scientist in me is quite nitpicky about this point).
Curiously, although I am a rightie, I shoot left-handed. Well, left-eyed rather.

I think you need an armguard; the string is supposed to do that. If it does not, that may mean that you are bending your arm out of the way. Trying to guess: the arrows are nicely grouped in the upper-left corner from the target center?

No and no. I do have an armguard, and I do keep bow-arm straight. Grouped yes, right rather than left of bullseye. I am not using sight yet, nor working on accuracy yet. Consistency/precision is my concern at the moment:)

Grouped right on the level with bullseye? That is actually great shooting (of course, I don't know the distance). I am still not able to achieve this: my performance is low-bias high-variance.

What kind of bow?

Height varies, but i favor the right side quite consistently. We only have indoor archery in New York City, so it is very close range

Ну, если хотите, приезжайте в тёплое время года пострелять из лука :)
У меня сейчас мишень в подвале, всего 20 ярдов, не очень интересно. Но вообще в округе есть клубы с лесными дорожками и тренажёрами для охотников.

Dude, we are having a hard time hitting the broad side of the barn. We are shooting so far at 10 yards working on form

How high are the ceilings in your basement?

Not high enough :) The bow barely fits.

But shooting outside is... what's the word... fun? :)

Well, maybe you ARE left-eyed?
I am overwhelmingly left-eyed - can't use monocular microscope or DSLR viewfinder with my right eye; at the same time, I am rather right-handed (right side is stronger, and I write with my right hand, although I am pretty ambidextrous with most of hand-specific skills), and right-legged.
If you are left-eyed, go with the left-hand shooting - it's much easier to build up some the muscle on the left than switch eye dominance to the right eye.

Next time you're in town we'll take you ... they will give you a 5 minute intro then they will set u up for the remaining hour and a half of shooting.

It's oodles of fun and i guess it's sorta like calligraphy -- you shoot and then you think about what you did and shoot again.

They supply all the gear in the beginning but at some point you will want your own things :)
